2000 Acura Integra Type R Sells For $112k As The World Goes Crazy

Auctions / 19 Comments

Was it painted in gold or something?

Whether this is the start of a new trend remains to be seen but late last week, someone paid $112,112 bid for this 2000 Acura Integra Type R on Bring A Trailer. Its odometer reads just 6,649 miles. Purchased new by the seller over 21 years ago in Connecticut, this Phoenix Yellow (the most popular color) over black cloth Type R is about as mint as you can get. Power comes from a 1.8-liter inline-four linked to a five-speed manual and limited-slip differential. Total output is rated at 195 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque.

The Integra Type R remains at the top of many people's list as the all-time best front-wheel-drive performance car. But is it really worth the price paid? Who knows.

What we know for certain is that this example surpassed the price paid back in 2019 for a 1997 Integra Type R by just over $30,000. Today's used car market is already pretty wacky with many late-model used vehicles selling for just as much (and sometimes more) than their fresh off-the-truck counterparts. It's a simple issue of high demand and low supply. But paying over $112k for a two-decade-old Acura? Is this the new norm?

Yes, this Type R has crazy low mileage and an overall picture-perfect interior and exterior. But does this prove these FWD wonders are the new darlings of the vintage car auction market? Japanese sports cars have a history of doing well and increasing in value over the years.

The owner/seller might have realized that 20 years ago and decided to garage it rather than driving it. Those Connecticut winters are brutal and rust is neither cheap nor easy to repair. This example also had zero accidents and the sale included some manufacturer's literature, original pedals, battery brace, and oil cap. There's also a center armrest-mounted Type R plaque listing this example as build No. 1,439.

This car is so original it's still wearing the factory-spec Bridgestone Potenza tires whose date codes are from 2000. We now live in a world where old but low mileage Acura Integra Type Rs sell for new Porsche 911 Carrera money.
