2021 Lincoln Navigator L Review: Extravagance Expanded

by Aiden Eksteen

When it comes to grand luxury cruising and the utmost in extravagance, there are only a small selection of premium full-size, three-row, SUVs that the most affluent of society can opt for. The 2021 Lincoln Navigator L is one that occupies a top spot in the hierarchy of premium cruisers, with the Cadillac Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, and the Lexus LX 570 all offering similar levels of frills and indulgence. With an authoritative 450-horsepower V6 under its hood, confident and refined performance define the Navigator L's character on the road, though with its immense size, heft, and blingy 22-inch wheels, it can be a bit of a drudge to pilot. That's a trivial price to pay for what the Navigator L SUV offers in cabin and trunk space thanks to its stately, long-wheelbase format. There are a lot of comforts and conveniences to be enjoyed within all that cabin space, too, including heated and ventilated front seats, a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a panoramic sunroof, to name just a few. Is the 2021 Lincoln Navigator L worth its weight in gold, or can shoppers of means get a lot more value elsewhere with their hard-earned cash?

2021 Lincoln Navigator L Changes: 🚙What’s the difference vs 2020 Navigator L?

Very little has changed for the 2021 model year, in anticipation of a more major mid-cycle refresh expected for the 2022 model. For now, the fourth-gen Navigator gets access to the Monochromatic Package. It swaps out chrome trim and wheels for blacked-out equivalents. There are new paint colors, too: Blue Diamond, Rhapsody Blue, Silver Jade, and Iced Mocha.

Engine and Transmission

To account for its immense size and heft, Lincoln assigns the Navigator L with a brawny twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter, 6-cylinder gas engine that's been modulated to emit up to 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Power is commanded by a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission and is sent through to either the SUVs rear- or four-wheel drivetrain. The powertrain propels the hefty beast with ease and acceleration responses are always brisk, smooth, and immediate. If you're planning on regularly hauling hefty loads, the Navigator L SUV in RWD guise offers an 8,700-pound maximum towing capacity while the 4WD model can manage only 8,300-lbs.

Verdict: 🏁Is the 2021 Lincoln Navigator L a good SUV?

In the USA, Lincoln presents the 2021 Navigator L SUV at a starting price of $85,715, which is a a lot to pay for a vehicle in any sense. The Navigator L is a dazzling car though - in its presence and the opulence it cossets its occupants in. There's plenty of room for every passenger to enjoy, from the front seats all the way through to the 3rd-row, and still enough space in the trunk for everyone's stuff. If there's a larger or an excessive amount more cargo that needs to go along on your travels, the Navigator L SUV can also haul up of 8,700-pounds of whatever it may be. Some may be turned away by the fact that Lincoln has implemented some part-sharing from Ford's vehicles in the cabin, but they're fairly well hidden and don't take away from the first-rate impression. The Navigator L's difficult drivability and oftentimes rough ride quality aren't ideal for regular, everyday driving, but with its solid and sound performance and comprehensive array of comforts and conveniences, it's certainly one of the best 5-door vehicles to travel on vacation in or use for road trips. That is, if you're not too concerned with its fuel economy. A really good safety rating from the NHTSA and IIHSs' review of the 2021 Lincoln Navigator along with promising reliability expectations support this notion.
