So the BMW 4 Series Coupe is back again for another round of roasting. Seriously, when this car came out with that insane front grille, we thought BMW would never hear the end of it, but it seems like the dust has settled, and we can finally focus on all the things that this coupe does well. For 2022, things remain more or less the same with the exception of a few feature shuffles; the powertrain lineup is as good as ever. The spunky little 2.0-liter engine offers a great balance between power and economy, but it's the 3.0-liter, 382-horsepower inline-six in the M440i and M440i xDrive that always grabs our attention. As has been the case for years, the 4 Series is positioned as the more driver-focused option alongside more subtle competitors like the Audi A5, but is a focus on the driver enough to elevate it to the top of the class against rivals that include the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe?
Not much has changed for the 2022 model year lineup, especially as it arrived as an all-new model not long ago, but BMW has made some minor changes to make the 4 Series Coupe an even more attractive choice for young Wall Street business people. The sporty M440i is now available in rear-wheel-drive guise, and a few previously optional features have now become standard. Ambient lighting can now be found across the lineup, and the optional Premium package now features a head-up display, power lumbar support for the front seats, and gesture control. Live Cockpit Professional is now standard. The SensaTec upholstery now has perforation, and two new exterior paint colors join the lineup: Aventurin Red Metallic and Brooklyn Grey Metallic.

The most significant talking point around the 2022 BMW 4 Series Coupe is always going to be that big, gaping grille. We've grown to accept it, and some even like it, but as with any car design, it boils down to personal taste. The rest of the 4 Series Coupe is rather sexy, and we love the sleek side profile and sporty rear end. Standard features on the 430i include 18-inch V-spoke bi-color orbit grey wheels, Shadowline exterior trim, a power glass moonroof, and power-folding, heated side mirrors. M440i models get 18-inch M-Double-spoke bi-color wheels wrapped in performance run-flat tires, a rear spoiler, and an aerodynamic body kit.
Exterior lighting is expectedly comprehensive. All models have LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, along with adaptive brake lights. 430i models have smaller, rounded tailpipes on either end of the body, while M440i versions have larger tailpipes with a more rectangular-style shape.
This luxury coupe is one of the bigger vehicles in its class. It measures 187.9 inches in length, around three inches longer than the Audi A5 Coupe, and about 3.5 inches longer than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. The width is 81.9 inches with the mirrors included, or 72.9 inches when folded, and the height is 54.6 inches (54.8 inches for xDrive models). The BMW 4 Series Coupe rides on a 112.2-inch wheelbase, one of the lengthiest in its class. The M440i shares all these dimensions, although it is marginally longer at 188 inches.
The BMW's curb weight begins at 3,578 pounds for the rear-wheel-drive 430i and increases to 3,977 lbs for the M440i xDrive.
The base model is offered in Alpine White and Jet Black at no cost but can also be painted in eleven different metallic colors. These include Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Sunset Orange, Bluestone, Portimao Blue, San Remo Green, Arctic Race Blue, and Brooklyn Gray. These metallics all carry a price tag of $500. BMW also offers three $1,500 metallic paint options: Dravit Grey, Tanzanite Blue II, and Aventurin Red. If we were the ones buying, we'd go for one in Portimao Blue.
The M440i shares a similar color palette but loses out on Jet Black, Sunset Orange, and Bluestone.
BMW has traditionally been the driver's choice when it comes to German luxury cars, and the 2022 BMW 4 Series Coupe continues to push that sporty image with mixed results. With two powerful engine options available, the 4 Series Coupe certainly isn't a slouch off the line. The entry-level 430i is powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged gas engine producing 255 hp and 294 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the 0 to 60 mph sprint takes a brisk 5.5 seconds. The AWD 430i xDrive will do the same sprint in 5.3 seconds.
Stepping up to the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine in the M440i sees the power level increased to 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque, resulting in a 0-60 mph sprint time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph, or 155 mph when fitted with performance tires. The M440i xDrive drops that time down to 4.3 seconds and feels properly rapid when given a decent stretch of road.
The 2022 BMW 4 Series is offered with two engine options, both of which offer impressive performance and decent fuel economy. The base engine, found in the 430i and 430i xDrive, is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 255 hp and 294 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear or all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. This little four-cylinder offers a strong surge of torque throughout the low to mid-range and feels peppy in town. On the highway, it settles down nicely, and there's more than enough urge for overtaking.
BMW is known for its brilliant inline-six engines, so if you're any sort of enthusiast, the B58 3.0-liter six-cylinder TwinPower turbo engine is the only way to go. Producing 382 hp and 368 lb-ft, this motor delivers strong performance and makes the 4 Series feel properly rapid. Not only is it powerful, but the inline-six engine sounds pretty good too and significantly adds to the 4 Series' athletic character. This inline-six will waste no time winning you over on a test drive. The eight-speed automatic used in both powertrains offers quick and smooth shifts.
BMW vehicles have traditionally been the choice of driving enthusiasts, and coupe models have always had a reputation for being fun to drive - so does the 2022 4 Series live up to this from behind the wheel? In base spec, the 4 Series Coupe has a surprisingly compliant chassis and suspension setup that doesn't exactly scream sports car, and unfortunately, the steering is nearly devoid of feeling - no matter how much you experiment with the various drive modes - which greatly detracts from driver engagement. On the plus side, the car is willing to make changes in direction without feeling flustered and offers good grip when pushed hard. The softer damping is perfect for town driving and highway cruising. The M models are the way to go for those looking for a more dynamic experience. Fitted with stiffer M suspension, the M440i and M440i xDrive are arguably more fun to drive and are more responsive to steering input. We'd still consider the 4 Series Coupe to be more of a tourer than a track-day star, though.
For a sporty German coupe, the BMW 4 Series is impressively frugal when it comes to gas mileage, especially in its four-cylinder configuration. The 2022 BMW 430i will manage 25/34/28 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles, according to the EPA. The AWD 430i xDrive will see those numbers drop slightly to 23/33/27 mpg. Going for the larger and more powerful 3.0-liter engine will cost you, but not as much as you'd imagine: the M440i will return 25/34/28 mpg, matching its less powerful four-cylinder sibling, and the M440i xDrive still manages a respectable 23/32/26 mpg. Fitted with a 15.6-gallon fuel tank, you're looking at a maximum range of between 406 and 437 miles.
BMW likes to keep its interiors understated yet classy, and the 2022 BMW 4 Series continues that design language. The cabin looks and feels like a tech-rich environment. It's a cool space, but not as warm and expressive as that of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. Build quality and material choices are superb, and even the harder plastics have a feel of robust quality to them. From the base model up, BMW now offers standard ambient interior lighting, which adds to the futuristic feel of the 4 Series' cabin, and all models get multi-zone climate control and power-adjustable front seats. The driver is assisted by advanced standard safety features such as active blind-spot detection and lane departure warning.
Two-door coupes are notorious for making the front passengers feel like superstars, at the cost of blood circulation in the legs of those at the back, but the BMW 4 Series Coupe somehow manages to break that stereotype. In the front, there's ample head and legroom for lofty adults, and in the back, the 4 Series only gives up 0.7 inches of legroom compared to the 3 Series Sedan, for a total of 34.5 inches. This means your average-sized adult will be able to endure long road trips without the need to gnaw through their legs. Unfortunately, rear headroom isn't great, and taller occupants might feel the headliner brush up on their domes. Those in the front get power-adjustable seats, so finding a comfortable driving position is a simple task. As expected, climbing into and out of the back seat isn't a graceful affair.
The 4 Series comes fitted with standard perforated SensaTec seats. Canberra Beige, Tacora Red, Cognac, or Black colors are available. There are five Vernasca leather options on offer, namely Tacora Red, Black, Mocha, Black with Blue contrast stitching, and Oyster. These options all come with a price tag of $1,450 but require you to select other packages that will further raise the price. In terms of trim options, BMW offers open-pore Fine Wood Oak grain, a high gloss Fine Wood Ash Grey-Brown, Aluminum Tetragon, and Aluminum. All models feature an Anthracite headliner.
As a coupe, the BMW 4 Series was never destined to carry massive amounts of stuff, but seeing as it can comfortably accommodate four adults, it should at the very least be able to carry a decent amount of luggage. The BMW 4 Series offers a class-leading 12 cubic feet of space, beating out the Audi A5 with its 10.9 cubes and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, which offers 10.5 cubes. With 12 cubic feet of trunk space on offer, you'll be able to pack lightly for four adults, and its square shape maximizes the total volume on offer. The rear seats fold down if more space is required, making this BMW Coupe rather practical.
Inside the cabin, the 4 Series offers a set of cup holders, a center console storage bin, a set of door pockets, and a glovebox. Those in the rear get their own cupholders and side storage nooks.
Premium cars tend to come with premium features, and the 2022 BMW 4 Series Coupe is no different, even at its base price. Unlike many other manufacturers, BMW keeps the feature list more or less the same across the board, with the only significant differences between each model being the engine or drivetrain configuration. M cars get unique chassis tuning and a few go-faster exterior styling changes, too. The 430i benefits from a long list of standard features, including dynamic cruise control, a digital 5.1-inch instrument cluster, an engine start/stop button, multi-zone climate control, power front sport seats with 2-way power side bolsters, an automatic-dimming interior rearview mirror, a two-way power glass moonroof. Standard driver assistance features include automatic high beams, frontal collision warning, automatic city collision mitigation braking, active blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, and front and rear park distance control.
The M440i models also have Comfort Access keyless entry. We find it disappointing that you have to pay extra for heated front seats, though.
The 4 Series Coupe shares the same infotainment system across the board. The system consists of an 8.8-inch touchscreen display linked to a multi-input iDrive 7.0 system that is controlled via voice or the classic iDrive controller. This system features Bluetooth streaming for voice calls and audio streaming, two USB ports, freely programmable bookmarks, and can receive over-the-air updates. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a sound system with a 205-watt digital amplifier and ten speakers. Those familiar with the BMW iDrive system will have no issue with this setup, and newcomers should get to grips with it in a few days. The interface is easy enough to work with, and the sound system offers crisp and full tones, especially when listening to classics such as Blessed with light by Internal Rot.
Added-cost options include a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A more powerful Harman Kardon sound system is also on the options menu.
There have been no recalls for the 2022 model year, but the 2021 model was recalled for a passenger seat belt malfunction, a rearview camera malfunction, and a head-thorax airbag deployment issue, so the car's reliability record hasn't been flawless. On a positive note, the 2022 model has a stellar rating from J.D. Power at 87 out of 100 for quality and reliability.
BMW backs the 2022 4 Series with a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, a 12-year corrosion warranty, a four-year/50,000-mile drivetrain warranty, a three-year/36,000-mile maintenance plan, and a four-year roadside assistance plan for US customers.
No BMW 4 Series Coupe crashworthiness review has yet been conducted by the NHTSA, and the IIHS has also neglected to crash test this German luxury vehicle. However, its closely-related sibling, the BMW 3 Series, has attained some solid reviews. The sedan managed to score a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS in 2021, meaning the 4 Series should also be on the safer side of cars cruising US roads.
NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.
Each and every 4 Series Coupe comes fitted with eight airbags, including knee airbags for both front occupants and curtain airbags. Other industry standards include a rearview camera, ABS, a tire pressure monitoring system, and stability and traction control.
As far as driver assistance systems go, the 4 Series comes standard with automatic high beams, frontal collision warning, automatic city collision mitigation and braking, active blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, and front and rear park distance control. Adaptive cruise control is available as part of a package for M440i models, as is a traffic jam assistant and a head-up display.
Now that the dust has settled around the 4 Series' almighty nostrils, we can start appreciating this premium German coupe for what it really is: a comfortable and elegant sports tourer that packs a powerful punch. In a class occupied by the likes of the Audi A5 Coupe and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, you're never going to get a razor-sharp driving machine; this class focuses on a comfortable yet sporty driving experience without sacrificing ride comfort, but the BMW still stands out as one of the better-driving machines. In 430i guise, it is at its best in terms of road comfort, and that 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivers more than enough power for the stylish cats that will be driving these. The M440i range delivers a more visceral experience but comes equipped with more hardcore chassis bits, making it a stiffer ride. The interior is reserved but elegant and well equipped, and we're impressed with how practical this car is, especially from a cargo and rear passenger space standpoint. The styling will always be a contentious subject, but look past that, and the 2022 BMW 4 Series Coupe is an absolute banger.
A modern, two-door BMW coupe was never going to be cheap. The 2022 BMW 4 Series Coupe in 430i configuration starts with an MSRP of $45,800 before tax, registration, and a destination fee of $995. Adding the xDrive AWD system will push the price up to $47,800. The more powerful M versions command quite a premium. The M440i Coupe will set you back $56,700, and the xDrive model goes for $58,700. Fully loaded, the M440i xDrive will set you back a hair over $68,500 in the USA.
There are four trims on offer for the 2022 model year. The 4 Series range starts with the 430i and is accompanied by the AWD 430i xDrive. The two M models on offer are the M440i and M440i xDrive. 430i models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. M440i models get a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six motor. These configurations exclude the high-performance M4 and M4 Competition, of course, models that we review separately.
The base model shares most of its features with the rest of the lineup. Exterior features include 18-inch wheels and LED headlights. The interior features a three-spoke leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, power front sport seats with 2-way power side bolsters, an automatic-dimming interior rearview mirror, multi-zone climate control, a two-way power glass moonroof, and SensaTec upholstery. The 8.8-inch infotainment display features voice control, Bluetooth streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a ten-speaker sound system. Standard driver assistance features include automatic high beams, frontal collision warning, and front/rear park distance control.
The 430i xDrive adds an xDrive AWD system, but is otherwise identical to the 430i.
The M440i range adds a leather M steering wheel, comfort keyless access, front lumbar support, and performance upgrades such as an M Sport differential, M Sport brakes with blue calipers, and an M Sport Suspension. The M440i xDrive adds AWD.
The base model can be equipped with the $550 Convenience package, which adds lumbar support and Comfort Access keyless entry, and the $1,300 Premium 2 package includes gesture control, Comfort Access keyless entry, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and lumbar support. However, this package requires Live Cockpit Pro and that raises the total cost to $1,875. The $400 Shadowline package adds bold black visuals to the car's exterior, and the $2,450 Dynamic Handling package adds M Sport brakes, a sporty diff, and adaptive M suspension.
M models are offered with a $1,700 Driving Assistance Professional package that adds Active Driving Assistant Pro and extended traffic jam assist to the safety roster. For those who really like driving, BMW also offers a $2,400 Cooling and High-Performance Tire package which improves the braking and cooling system of the car and adds adaptive M suspension. For those who want gesture control, a head-up display, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel, the Premium Package can be specified and will add $1,600 to your bill.
Live Cockpit Pro with navigation can be added as a standalone option for $750, as can various other bits and pieces from heating and ventilation for the front seats ($500 and $350, respectively) to the premium Harman Kardon surround sound system for $875.
Seeing as all four trims have more or less the same amount of luxury features, the choice here boils down to budget and how fast you want to go. The base 430i isn't a slow car by any stretch of the imagination and will whip most hot hatchbacks off the line, but the BMW 4 Series Coupe looks too good to only have 255 hp. We'd suggest going with the tail-happy M440i. We wouldn't bother with any optional extras, as the car works perfectly in its standard form.
Competitor | Horsepower | MPG | Price (MSRP) |
---|---|---|---|
BMW 4 Series Coupe | 255 hp | 25/34 mpg | $45,800 |
Audi A5 Coupe | 261 hp | 24/31 mpg | $46,000 |
BMW 5 Series Sedan | 335 hp | 25/32 mpg | $54,200 |
The A5 Coupe is one of the 4 Series' closest competitors and starts off at a similar price. The 2022 A5 Coupe is exclusively available with AWD and is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 261 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In comparison to the BMW, the Audi performs well but is more suited to cruising and lacks the sharpness of the 4 Series. The M440i and M440i xDrive are much more performance-focused, and the fact that the BMW comes with RWD cements it as the driver's choice here. Inside, the Audi offers similar levels of luxury and comfort but can't match the BMW's passenger and cargo space. We'd go for the BMW.
The BMW 5 Series is possibly one of the brand's most famous models. This executive vehicle has four doors and a proper trunk, so it's a far cry from the svelte two-door style of the 4 Series but still offers style, refinement, and plenty of enjoyment behind the wheel. The 5 Series is offered with the same 2.0-liter four and 3.0-liter inline-six powertrains but makes less power in both cases (248 hp and 335 hp, respectively). The 5 Series does, however, benefit from the M550i xDrive model, which puts down a massive 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. This makes the 5 Series a much more potent performance car. Naturally, the 5 Series offers more space, more cargo room, and is the more comfortable car to live with, but it can still entertain behind the wheel. If you need the space, get the 5 Series.
