All The New EVs Coming In 2022

With the world turning to electrification in lieu of changing government legislation, the next five to ten years are going to be massive for new reveals, new technology, and new experiences. Over the last couple of years, we've waited patiently and watched as all the promises roll in, but now, development has been done and the 2022 model year will usher in a plethora of new cars to the market.

Nearly 30 new EVs are slated to arrive as 2022 model year machines. Some touched down a little earlier, and we've already driven several of them, coming away pleasantly surprised.

For all the EV lovers, these are all the EVs touching down in America for MY22.

Audi bolsters its EV lineup substantially in 2022. Having already had a presence in the market with the e-tron and e-tron Sportback SUVs, new e-tron S variants of both are arriving with more power. Also joining the e-tron family are the e-tron GT and the RS e-tron GT, based on the same platform as the Porsche Taycan. We've already driven these and they blew us away. Lastly, all-new arrivals include the Q4 e-tron and Q4 e-tron Sportback, new SUVs that will go toe-to-toe with the BMW iX.

The iX is one of two new BMW EVs for 2022. It's based on an all-new platform for BMW and effectively takes a place alongside the X5 in size and role for BMW. Cornering the other key area of the market, the BMW i4 is effectively an electric 4 Series Gran Coupe. We drove both in Germany earlier this year, and already predict BMW has a pair of winners on their hands.

Okay, so the Bolt EUV is nothing new. It arrived a while back but is technically a 2022 model year. It's effectively the crossover sibling of the heavily revised Bolt hatchback, looking to capitalize on a crossover-crazy market with many, many rivals.

For already has one electric car on the market in the form of the Mustang Mach-E, but in 2022 it will tackle two more crucial segments: vans and trucks. The E-Transit is an electrified version of the same nameplate and will fulfill a commercial role for the Blue Oval within cities and urban areas. The F-150 Lightning is the big one though, an electric F-Series pickup with massive towing capabilities, promising range, a familiar badge, and strong affordability with a Pro version to cater to businesses and fleets.

Genesis has gone a little lazy with its EV naming strategy, with the Electrified G80 being exactly what it says on the box, an electric version of the G80 sedan. It'll feature a solar roof and all the luxury we've come to expect from the G80, but with the benefit of a 365 horsepower electric powertrain, all-wheel drive, and more than 200 miles range. The GV60 is an all-new electric crossover that will share bones with the Kia EV6. Available in 2WD or AWD, power ranges from 225 hp to 483 hp. The electric range will be as much as 280 miles.

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup is technically arriving as a 2023 MY, but it'll start early enough in 2022 for us to include it here. The revival of the Hummer brand showcases GM's new Ultium technology. More than just a full-size truck, this is a luxury truck with up to 1,000 hp and three motors. A glass roof, 300-mile range, rear-axle steering, and cool features like Crabwalk will all be available, and the Ultium architecture will be able to charge quicker than any GM EV before.

Corporate sibling to the Kia EV6 and Genesis GV70, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has retro styling and looks like a hatchback. But it's a fully-fledged compact crossover akin to the Tucson. Available in rear- or all-wheel drive, four trims are available with prices starting at $39,700 before incentives and federal tax rebates. This is the first model of the Ioniq sub-brand and showcases a new era of propulsion and technology for Hyundai.

The Karma GSe-6 is supposed to arrive in 2022, but we have our doubts. Effectively an electric version of the Karma GS-6, it'll ride on a new platform that can technically cater for electric propulsion to the tune of 1,100 hp. The GSe-6 will likely get far less, however, especially with a claimed starting price of $79,900. Early indications point to two battery packs being available, an 85-kWh unit with a 230-mile range and a 105-kWh item with 300 miles of range. We're predicting delays here and arrival in 2023.

Sibling to the aforementioned GV60 and Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 is the dawn of a new era for the brand, highlighted by the EV6 GT with 576 hp, a sub-3.5-second 0-60 mph dash, and a circa-300-mile range. The new EV architecture boasts 800V charging capability, meaning up to 217 miles of range can be recuperated in as little as 18 minutes. The EV6 will arrive early in 2022.

Lexus has only just revealed the RZ. Available in a single RZ 450e trim, it will share a platform and underpinnings with the Toyota bZ4X, likely mimicking those available single- and dual-motor options found in the Toyota to produce up to 215 hp and close to 300 miles of range. Full details have not yet been revealed, but the RZ will likely only arrive towards the middle of the year.

The Lotus Evija is old news, right? Well, it may be, but the pandemic has delayed the launch, which is why it will make landfall in 2022 only. Just under 2,000 hp is the headline figure for Lotus' first electric car, with a top speed of over 200 mph. Range details have not been confirmed, but 800 kW charge rates mean it can recoup 80% charge in 18 minutes. Just 130 will be built, commanding a $2.1 million price tag and a deposit of over $300,000.

In 2022, an EV has to have great range, right? Mazda doesn't think so, and launches the Mazda MX-30 as the company's first EV, sporting only 100 miles of range. A rotary range extender will join later on in the year, but the pure EV has its work cut out for it, starting at $33,470 and seeming more like a regular SUV than an EV when it comes to packaging and performance. At least it has suicide rear doors, right?

Mercedes-Benz has a slew of new EVs coming soon, and three will arrive in 2022. The Mercedes EQS takes up the mantle as an electric S-Class and is available in two trims while being joined by the first mainstream AMG EV in the AMG EQS. These $100,000+ cars will appeal to the elite and showcase the full Mercedes EQ philosophy, complete with the 56-inch Hyperscreen. They will be joined by a smaller EV sedan, the Mercedes EQE in the coming months, which is effectively a 288-hp electric E-Class, although a 670-hp version is in the works. 300 miles range is the target for the EQE, which will face stiff competition from the BMW i4.

The Rimac Nevera is possibly the most eagerly anticipated EV of 2022. Who isn't excited about an electric hypercar with nearly 2,000 hp, an 8.6-second quarter-mile, a 285-mph top speed, and a 120-kWh battery integrated into the chassis that should be good for 300 miles of range? We know we are, and deliveries will hopefully begin towards the middle of the year. Just in time to fend off the Lotus Evija.

Rivian is new to the scene, but the R1T truck and R1S SUV twins are brimming with tech, power, and performance. Both have up to 800 hp from a four-motor powertrain in the right configuration, towing capacities in excess of 10,000 lbs, and a 314-mile range. Plus, there's drift mode! Price will be the make-or-break factor here as the R1T starts at $67,500, placing it in truly premium territory.

Put a big asterisk next to this one, as the Tesla Cybertruck faces delay after delay after delay, every other week. Its design is being tweaked and so are the powertrains, with the latest suggestion being four electric motors (no doubt in response to Rivian). If it arrives in 2022, expect the tri-motor to be prioritized first with circa 1,100 hp. Truthfully, though, little is actually known about the production Cybertruck, not from a spec, pricing, or performance perspective.

Toyota is going "beyond Zero" with the bZ4X, its first electric car. Up to 250 miles of range is the big highlight, but key figures also include a FWD powertrain with 200 hp, an AWD dual-motor setup with 215 hp, and capable off-road performance. It'll benefit from the latest Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 safety gear, be enabled with over-the-air (OTA) functionality, and arrive by mid-year.

Last on the list is Volvo's first dedicated EV, the Volvo C40 Recharge. Effectively, it's a coupe version of the XC40 Recharge, but with a new 78 kWh battery pack that takes 40 minutes to recharge 80% of its capacity and an estimated 210 miles of range. 402 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque are impressive figures, though, with a 4.7-second dash to 60 mph. Expect pricing to start north of $55,000 when it arrives to try to take on the Audi e-tron Sportback.
