Alpina Has Built A Very Pretty M4 Gran Coupe

You wouldn't know it from reading internet comments, but owners of the BMW 4 Series are extremely happy with their cars, even with that massive kidney grille up front. Among all 4 Series models, the 2023 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is our favorite because it pairs coupe-like styling with a practical four-door body style that also features a liftback. Earlier this year, Alpina introduced a prettier version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe called the B4 Gran Coupe packing a 3.0-liter inline-six producing 488 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque.

Alpina has just introduced another new 4 Series variant, this time called the D4 S Gran Coupe. The D is in reference to its fuel, which is not gasoline but diesel.

Unlike the B4, the D4 S uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six diesel engine. Power is down compared to the B4 with 350 hp, but torque is identical. The gas-powered B4 will win the sprint from 0 to 62 mph (3.7 seconds compared to 4.8) and go on to a higher top speed (187 mph versus 168 mph) but the D4 S will drink less fuel.

One thing you do not lose with the D4 S is those gorgeous Alpina styling details. In fact, it's nearly impossible to tell this car apart from the B4. It includes Alpina's classic 20-spoke wheels (available in silver, grey, and black) wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires, blue brake calipers, a unique plaque on the lower front fascia, small rear spoiler, and a choice between the company's unique blue and green paint jobs. Of course, other colors are available, including BMW Individual ones, but how could anyone say no to that stunning Alpina Green?

Inside, the D4 S boasts a modern BMW cabin with a few specific touches to set it apart as an Alpina. These details include an Alpina badge on the steering wheel with green and blue stitching, blue digital gauges, special seat stitching, and a plaque on the center console. Pricing begins at €79,700 (around $84,000) in Europe with no plans for availability stateside since BMW no longer sells diesels in the US market. Alpina typically only brings its larger vehicles to the US, and it has never sold a diesel model here. With BMW recently purchasing Alpina, perhaps this could change soon.
