For 2022, there are only two Cadillac sedans left in the automaker’s lineup, the compact CT4 and midsize CT5 - the latter essentially replacing the XTS. The 2021 Cadillac sedan models still included the full-size CT6, but this model has been discontinued. Cadillac’s gas-powered sedans are going out with a bang, offering a unique proposition in their respective classes with very powerful Blackwing flagships that are available with manual transmissions.
The Current Cadillac Sedan Models
The CT4 and CT5 lineups mirror each other in that both offer normal models, sporty V models, and hardcore V Blackwing models with manual transmissions:
- Cadillac CT4: The Cadillac CT4 is unique in its class by not fitting into any existing box. In terms of size, it is bigger than the FWD/AWD Mercedes-Benz CLA and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and smaller than the C-Class and 3 Series. Yet, it offers RWD/AWD drivetrains and very rapid Blackwing flagships. Enthusiasts appreciate the powerful engine lineup, an available manual transmission on the Blackwing, and excellent dynamics coupled with attractive styling and good interior tech. However, interior finishes are not up to the best in class, it’s small inside, too many safety features are extra-cost options, and the 10-speed automatic can occasionally be indecisive.
- Cadillac CT5: The midsize CT5 offers a lot of vehicle for the money on the normal models, undercutting its German rivals. Its styling is attractive and interior comfort is good, as is the infotainment system, while the V and Blackwing models offer storming performance and class-leading ride and handling, even on large wheels. The Blackwing’s reliable LT4 supercharged V8 with 668 horsepower and an available manual transmission make it unique in this class. The cabin’s finishes and general design are not up to expectations though, despite the many luxury features, and the automatic transmission can stumble at times. The Blackwing is likely to be the world’s last manual-transmission midsize super sedan.

FAQs
Which is the best Cadillac sedan model to buy?
The best new Cadillac sedan you can buy is, without a doubt, the CT5-V Blackwing. It is unique, not just in the USA, but in the world, for offering the extremely powerful 668-hp supercharged V8 in a sedan body with a manual transmission. As automatic transmissions take over and Cadillac prepares for an all-electric future, this is undoubtedly a future classic, the likes and specification of which will never be seen again. It will be the last manual-transmission fossil-fuel-powered V8 super sedan ever offered by Cadillac. Don’t lease it; buy it to keep forever.
Should I buy a manual or automatic Blackwing?
GM’s ten-speed automatic transmission is excellent and provides the best combination of everyday usability and accessible performance on the Blackwing models. However, the availability of a manual transmission makes these cars unique and much more involving to drive for the enthusiast. These models are also bound to become collector’s items. Besides that, the manuals are cheaper than the automatics and offer active rev-matching for downshifts and a No Lift Shift function that allows you to keep your foot flat on the accelerator while shifting gears.
Do the CT4-V and CT5-V models replace previous-generation Cadillac V models?
No. The previous-generation ATS-V and CTS-V models were the top-performing flagships of their respective ranges, but the new V models are pitched below them, similarly to the way S Audis are below RS Audis. The V cars are now intermediate performance models and the Blackwing cars effectively replace the V models of yesteryear with the maximum performance in the range. The new V models can, therefore, not be compared directly to the old ones.
What are the CT4-V Blackwing’s natural rivals?
Cadillac says that the CT4-V Blackwing is pitched against the Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 and Audi RS3, rivals it nearly matches on price, but both of which it beats in terms of power output and performance. BMW does not currently field a sedan in this class. The Cadillac’s sprint to 60 mph in only 3.8 seconds actually matches that of the new BMW M4 Competition sedan, but at more than $10,000 less, making the Caddy a performance bargain. And it’s available in a manual, which the BMW can’t match.
