Chevy's Hardcore Colorado ZR2 Bison In Hot Demand

For those who don't think the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is badass enough, there's the ZR2 Bison. Back in 2018, Chevy teamed up with off-road aftermarket tuner American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) to create an even more hardcore version, and demand has never ceased. All 2,000 examples quickly sold out in 2019 and both Chevy and AEV arranged to increase production for 2020.

We don't have an exact figure but GM Authority claims ZR2 Bisons are spending very little time on dealership lots. As of last month, units are leaving lots just 33 days on average after initial arrival. The average industry standard is 60 days for all new vehicles.

Even during a pandemic when jobs have been lost and consumers are forced to tighten their belts, America's truck craving remains stronger than ever. In the case of the ZR2 Bison, this also applies to niche models. Still, AEV has done a fine job making a great midsize truck designed for serious off-roading even better. Enhanced off-road accessories include five skid plates, steel front and rear bumpers, ZR2 Bison-specific 17-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratec off-road tires, wheel moldings, fog lamps, and AEV embroidered headrests.

The ZR2's 2.8-liter turbo diesel with 186 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque and six-speed automatic transmission remain untouched.

Pricing begins at $48,000, a pretty decent bargain considering the truck's capabilities. AEV's CEO, knowing full well demand remains high, previously stated he's cautious about building too many units for fear off too many unsold models by year's end. Unfortunately, Chevy combines ZR2 and ZR2 Bison sales so it's impossible to get a precise sales breakdown.

As far as we know, the Bison package will continue for the 2022 model year, though it's important to bear in mind the Colorado itself is aging fast. A major refresh will supposedly happen in the near future and with it, hopefully, an extension of the AEV partnership.
