While hybrid power has been included in the Lexus lineup for some time, the latest Lexus ES Hybrid has been fine-tuned as part of the seventh generation, which was introduced to the USA for the 2019 model year. Powering the premium 4-door cruiser is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that's been augmented with an electric motor to produce a combined power output of 215 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque, which is ceded through an electronic continuously variable automatic transmission to the midsize sedans front-wheel drivetrain. The ES Hybrids performance is pleasant and refined, and it's superbly fuel-efficient, too. It's no sports car with its 8.1-second 0 to 60 mph time and 112 mph top speed, but with a new F SPORT 300h model offered with a specialized suspension kit, there is a little bit of fun to had.
Lexus prioritizes comfort over all else, however, and ensures that the sedan has plenty of premium comforts and conveniences as well as loads of tech and driver-assist systems. Those looking for a more entertaining vehicle may prefer rivals like the BMW 3 Series Hybrid though, while the Honda Insight would be the better buy for anyone wanting something at a more reasonable price.
The entire ES lineup benefits from a few key updates, including revisions to the infotainment system, added safety and performance features, and tweaks to the exterior design. In terms of aesthetics, the bi-LED exterior lights have been refreshed and the grille design updated, while new 17-inch wheels are standard on base models. The interior and exterior color palette has also been reviewed with two new colors replacing some of the silvers and grays. The multimedia display has been repositioned within the cabin and updated with new touch-screen functionalities.
A blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and the Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 are also made standard for this model year.
Lastly - and arguably most importantly - is the fact that the ES Hybrid now has an F SPORT variant for the first time ever, for those who want the benefit of fuel efficiency and athletic looks.

The 2022 Lexus ES Hybrid is a superb luxury cruiser and hybrid, offering pleasant and polished performance in the form of confident acceleration, impressive handling dynamics, and a serene ride quality. It's impressively frugal, too, returning fuel economy figures of 43/44/44 mpg city/highway/combined. 215 hp is plenty for the midsize sedan, but despite the introduction of the F SPORT model this year, the ES Hybrid is to no extent a performance sedan. The ES Hybrid is a premium sedan and as such comes outfitted with an extensive list of high-end features as standard, including all-LED exterior lighting, leather seating, and an updated infotainment layout with touch functionality.
The sedan also comes standard with Lexus' comprehensive Safety System+ 2.5. The 2022 Lexus ES Hybrid has undergone review by the NHTSA and earned a five-star overall safety rating with this expanded suite and ten airbags. And, the Lexus sedan offers excellent reliability with only a single recall for the 2020 model year, which was resolved in subsequent modes. All in all, the 2022 ES Hybrid is a superb vehicle and certainly worth considering if you're in the market for a premium family sedan with a hybrid powertrain.
The starting price of the 2022 Lexus ES Hybrid sedan comes in at $41,900 for the entry-spec 300h model. If you're keen on the all-new F SPORT model for the sportier design and styling elements it comes with, Lexus offers it at $45,450. With significantly more comforts and conveniences, the Luxury model is priced at $47,300. For everything the ES Hybrid sedan line has to offer, there's the Ultra Luxury which costs $51,080. All prices are exclusive of Lexus' $1,075 delivery, processing, and handling fee.
