Ford Maverick Hybrid Goes 600 Miles On A Single Tank

How can anyone not be impressed?

There's no question the Ford Maverick Hybrid is one of the most popular vehicles to hit the market in the past few months. It's already sold out for model year 2022. The Maverick project itself was a slight risk for Ford, which bet on the fact Americans desired a compact, car-based pickup truck with standard front-wheel-drive. The EPA gave the $19,995 Maverick Hybrid an impressive 37 mpg combined fuel economy rating but, as it turns out, it can do even better than that.

Per The Maverick Truck Club Forum, a Maverick Hybrid owner managed to travel 595.2 miles on a single tank of gas. He even had 24 miles remaining. That means the new truck has a 620-mile range.

The truck's software calculated a 44.1 mpg average, a figure that far exceeds the EPA's estimate. Of those 595 miles, about half (270) were electric. This isn't just some one-time thing. Other Maverick Hybrid owners and forum members chimed in on the discussions, many of whom claimed similar figures.

However, the forum member made no mention of his driving style and the type of terrain and road conditions he experienced. It could well have been mostly highway driving, but the results are still very impressive nonetheless. It's also worth noting that the Hybrid is FWD-only. An AWD, 2.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Maverick with 250 horsepower earned a far lower EPA rating of 22/29/25 mpg city/highway/combined.

Ford hasn't ruled out an AWD Hybrid variant but it'd be unlikely to achieve the same fuel economy as the FWD. As a refresher, the Maverick Hybrid comes powered by a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder paired to an electric motor for a combined output of 191 hp and 155 lb-ft.

Following our recent second time behind the wheel, we came away preferring the hybrid despite it being FWD only. The EcoBoost is definitely a punchy engine but the 2.5-liter hybrid surprised us with its more impressive acceleration, solid handling, and overall refinement. It's no wonder it's become a massive sales success. The 600-mile journey on a single tank is simply icing on the cake.
