We'll find out at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2022.
The Ford Transit Supervan was something wild, and oft-imitated. Hyundai made its own drift van a few years back, and other brands have tried the whole "fast van" thing on numerous occasions. Renault put a Formula 1 engine in the back of a van once. But Ford is still the undisputed fast van king. The Ford Supervan itself has had three iterations, each crazier than the last. The original even used the uncorked V8 engine from a Ford GT40.
Now, it looks like there could be another, set to debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (FoS) in a few weeks. And this time, it's going to be all-electric. At least, that's what we believe based on Ford's recent press releases, the general climate around EVs and gas cars, and of course, the Ford E-Transit Van. Allow us to explain.
Ford Europe posted that 20ish second clip to its Twitter today, showing a few mysterious shadowy shots of a racing helmet and a rather blocky shape in the background. We refer you to the image below. If that's not the back of a van, we don't know what is. Ford also recently introduced a new, fully-electric Transit, which we mentioned above. Over in Europe, the Transit is an incredibly popular vehicle, and it seems an ideal candidate for a new EV Supervan build.
Not only is it a recently-debuted model, but everything is going electric. Europe is set to be one of the most electrified regions on the planet within the coming decades, and that push is starting now. Of course, the branding seen on the helmet below also suggests whatever this is will debut at the FoS on June 26. So, let's talk about what that may look like.
Currently, the E-Transit uses electric motors to produce around 150 horsepower. Obviously, that's not very "Supervan," so we imagine Ford will be using a much larger battery with much more powerful motors. More power, paired with lower, more aggressive suspension, sticky tires, and wild aero is the Supervan recipe. Given the absurd speeds electric race cars are capable of, we're expecting similar performance from this van.
Supposing that's what this is. Again, you'd have to do a lot of convincing for us to stop thinking that silhouette in the background of the video isn't a van. It even has a similar nose compared to the E-Transit. Let's hope we're right.
