Lamborghini Proves The Performante's Nurburgring Lap Record Is Real

Lamborghini provides data to set the record straight regarding the Performante's record-breaking Nurburgring lap time.

The record-breaking Nurburgring lap time set by the phenomenal 640-HP Lamborghini Huracan Performante has come under scrutiny lately. Performing an incredible lap time around the 'Ring in just six minutes and 52.01 seconds, the hardcore Huracan managed to beat the previous production car record set by the Porsche 918 Spyder by five seconds – despite being less powerful and considerably cheaper. Unsurprisingly, this led to many calling the legitimacy of the lap into question.

Some have cited inconsistencies between the on-screen speedometer and the actual speedometer in the car among other factors. Speaking to Roadshow at the Geneva Motor Show, Lamborghini has set the record straight. According to Lamborghini's Director of Research and Development Maurizio Reggiani, the blistering lap time was possible due to several factors. Contrary to people accusing Lamborghini of fitting the Performante with special tires, Reggiani confirmed that the Pirelli Trofeo R tires used for the lap will be available for the road-going model. But what about the inconsistent speedometers?

That's because the speed is taken from GPS, which can sometimes give inconsistent results. Reggiani also said that looking at peak lap times in corners and straights only tells a small part of the story. While the Aventador SV may have a higher top speed around the 'Ring, the Performante gets up to speed quicker and carries more speed out of the corners. And if you needed proof of the record lap time, he showed a full VBox GPS log to Roadshow showing the full single session, shutting down conspiracy theorists who have argued the time was taken from multiple segments. This still probably won't satisfy those claiming the lap time was fake, but this is the most solid proof we're likely to get.
