Best Minivans of 2022
The bigger cousin of the ever-popular station wagon, the minivan has never really put down firm roots in the American market. That is not to say that there are not any capable models on offer. And, with seating for up to eight passengers, these machines still hold appeal for buyers looking to carpool their kid’s entire basketball team.
We’ve taken the time to look at these large vehicles, paying close attention to just how many passengers they seat, how much space they provide for each person, the standard and available features, and also the capacity of the trunk. We’ve also taken a gander under the hood, although most shoppers will only care that they will haul the entire family without a fuss. Our reviews compare each minivan so that you can easily find the best choice for your specific needs.

What to Consider Before Buying
This rather unique style of car certainly won’t appeal to just anyone. Shoppers seeking a bit more space will often rather look to three-row SUVs or wagon-style automobiles, which remain among the most popular vehicles in the USA. So what, exactly, do these cumbersome people haulers offer that sets them apart?
Pros
- Generally cheaper than a crossover
- Capable powertrains
- Plenty of space for both passengers and cargo
- Comfort-focused design
Cons
- Not the most fun to drive
- Middling fuel economy
- Average curb appeal
The Best Minivans for 2022
The list of top-rated minivans is not all that long, featuring only a handful of unique brands. Popular brands like Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Chevy, GM, or Jeep no longer cater to this segment in the States. But, the majority of options score remarkably well, with only one bearing a BuzzScore of less than 8.0.
- Chrysler - The only luxury brand in the segment currently, Chrysler actually offers three types of car within our top 5. The Pacifica and its Hybrid variant share the top spot, while the Voyager takes third. Both gasoline-powered cars get the same V6 engine that develops 287 hp and 262 lb-ft. This means they easily carry 7 passengers and their luggage without strain. Everyone gets more than enough space, although adults in the back may feel a little boxed in over longer drives. Luckily, the Pacifica is available with a sunroof to help alleviate any claustrophobia. Naturally, the hybrid boasts the equivalent of a best 30 mpg combined fuel economy.
- Toyota - The Sienna places just below the top 5. Unlike all its front-wheel-drive rivals though, it does offer AWD (true 4WD is not offered at all). Most trims come with 7 seats, although the mid-tier LE can be equipped with 8 seats. Regardless of configuration, the interior supplies adequate, though not stellar, space. The trunk is enormous, however, providing 39.1 cubic feet of standard cargo capacity.
- Honda - The Odyssey is one of the most reliable minivans on the market. Reasonably priced at just over $30k, it achieves quite competitive mileage of 19/28/22 mpg. It supplies an abundance of head- and legroom all-around, but the trunk is a little disappointing at 32.8 cubic feet.
- Dodge - In our minivan comparison, the Grand Caravan ranks last. It has not received a complete overhaul in over a decade, so it falls short of the competition in a number of areas. There are little or no driver-assistance features, trunk space is below par at 31.1 cubic feet, and cabin quality is hit-and-miss.
FAQs about minivans
What is the best minivan for 2021?
The top minivans in our rankings all bear the Chrysler nameplate, with the Pacifica nabbing the top spot. It is also the most expensive model on our list at over $34k. But, for the money, you get an upscale 7-seater with plenty of modern tech and creature comforts. The trunk is quite accommodating, too. It is not a fun driver, but it is eminently comfortable.
What minivans fit eight people?
Both the Kia Sedona and Toyota Sienna allow for 8-passenger set-ups. However, neither has the best third-row dimensions, and the loss of second-row captain’s chairs reduces overall comfort and accessibility. Neither has very good mileage ratings, either.
What is the most affordable minivan to buy?
There are several sub-$30k options. The cheapest is, surprisingly, the Chrysler Voyager at around $27k. The aged Dodge Grand Canyon will cost you upwards of $27k for a new model, while the Kia Sedona goes on sale for almost $28k. Naturally, considering a used model from 2019 or earlier will save you a little cash. If you only need to transport such large numbers of people on rare occasions, rather consider going the rental route, while those wishing to start a transport enterprise might want to consider some of the fleet-only offerings.
