More Mustang Shelby GT500s Have Been Stolen From Ford's Flat Rock Plant

Sports Cars / 3 Comments

Somebody needs to do something about security at the facility.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 may have got a sizeable price increase for the 2022 model year, but that hasn't stopped buyers from splashing out on expensive optional equipment. For these people, paying for the full experience is justified, but not everybody feels that way. In December, Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant was hit by thieves who made off with four of the special Shelby models. You'd think such a thing would be a once-off, but reports are now emerging that five or six GT500s have again been liberated from the Michigan, Detroit facility. Fortunately, police were able to detain one suspect this time, and three of the vehicles were recovered.

Police were quick to respond to the report and followed one of the Shelby GT500s until it ran out of gas. In so doing, troopers were able to detain the driver of this vehicle. A red and an orange GT500 were also recovered in different areas, with both again presumed to have run out of gas, but police say that there are still three GT500s missing. These are said to be Brittany Blue (signifying the Heritage Edition, pictured below) and some version of gray, presumably Dark Matter Gray. Conflicting reports have suggested that there are only two models still to be recovered, but we assume that more information will come to light soon enough.

While the efforts of the police must be lauded, we can't help but wonder how such a thing was allowed to happen again. After all, security was surely beefed up when the December incident occurred. Perhaps there's an insider, and perhaps the suspect that was taken into custody will provide some insight, but either way, this is an annoying problem, particularly for the customers whose cars were stolen. These customers have probably already endured delays due to the supply chain issues we're facing at the moment, so this is incredibly frustrating. The three GT500s that were recovered will now be kept for evidence and it will likely be some time before they can be returned to Ford.
