It's been over a year since the refreshed Chevrolet Equinox debuted at the Chicago Auto Show and it's still not on sale. Originally scheduled as a 2021 model, Chevy had no choice but to delay it until 2022 due to factory shutdowns. The 2020 model was carried over to the current model year. Aside from the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage plaguing the entire industry, auto production is largely back on track and that means the sportier-looking 2022 Equinox should be arriving in showrooms later this summer or early fall. However, it will be lacking something.
Thanks to an insider's tip, CarBuzz was informed that the newly optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque will no longer be offered.
A Chevrolet spokesperson has confirmed this. "After careful study, Chevrolet has decided to exclusively offer the refreshed 2022 Equinox with its tried and true 1.5L turbo engine. This has always been the powertrain of choice for the Equinox, meeting 90 percent of sales volume in past model years - and continues to be the overwhelming choice of Equinox buyers."
The 2.0-liter is currently only offered on the LT and Premier trims but, as Chevy made clear, it has not been a popular choice. Still, the 1.5-liter is not exactly a lightweight with 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque. Not everyone desires more power, particularly buyers who mainly want a fuel-efficient and affordable family crossover.
Those who desire a sportier and more powerful alternative should look no further than Chevy's own Blazer. Not only is it available with the 2.0 turbo, but also a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 with 305 hp and 269 lb-ft.
The restyled 2022 Equinox boasts a more Camaro-like front grille design with new split-level LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, new taillights, and a redesigned rear bumper. The interior has also been touched up with the Premier trim receiving French stitching on the upholstery and a new high-gloss black console finish. There's also the new RS trim for those who desire a sportier appearance. New wheel designs will also be available on most trims. Pricing should be announced in the coming months.
