Because 702 hp just isn't enough.
The Ram 1500 TRX is a monster of a truck, driven by the same 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8 used in Dodge's Hellcat models. It delivers 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque and can sprint from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. We have it on good authority that it's faster than that, however.
That authority is Ram's CEO, Mike Koval, who spoke to CarBuzz at the New York International Auto Show: "I think we say 0-60 mph in 4.5, but it's in the threes." For most, that's enough. But the question still remains, will there be more; an even wilder TRX with even more power, not built by a third-party company? And the answer seems to be yes.
"There's absolutely an appetite and a craving and an internal desire for more," said Koval. "And there can be more without sacrificing." When asked what he meant about the "sacrificing" part of his answer, he told us to think about what you can do with the power and torque of an EV. "I think about the future and what that could potentially look like with electrification, and we have the expertise to do more, and that's the cliffhanger," said Koval.
That's as close as you'll get to a confirmation, and to us sounds like a confirmation of a wilder TRX. There are already 1,000-hp TRXs out there, and Ram seems to want a piece of the pie. Yes, Ram is working on an EV too, but who says you can't do both?
Ram's upcoming EV will be wild too, but some have blamed the brand of being late to the party. Ignore those comments; Ram is taking a different approach. "We see the EV tidal wave coming, and it's our job to make sure we have a sustainable business model," explained Koval. "We know from research that people are willing to adopt EVs, but they're not willing to compromise."
In short, Ram is waiting because it wants to win. "We may not be the first to market, but we're in it to be the best."
For the moment, that means sitting back and looking at how customers respond to rival products. Ram can bring it to market sooner but at the moment, it's still looking at the competition, attending research clinics, and making changes on the truck based on customer feedback. Yes, it already exists, but we'll only see it once Ram is confident it's ready.
"I'm here to win," announced Koval. "I'm here to be better than the other guys." We're behind you and can't wait to see what's next.
