The BMW i7 Will Have A MASSIVE 8K Rear Screen

On Wednesday, BMW will debut its new electric luxury sedan, the BMW i7. Alongside the 8 Series, any BMW with a "7" on its trunk lid has long held the place of the brand's ultimate form of luxury transportation. Perhaps that's what makes the i7's electric powertrain all the more exciting. What's more luxurious than being silently whisked around in total comfort, after all?

Of course, technology and creature comforts certainly don't hurt, and from the looks of things, BMW won't be skimping on either. Most people don't have an 8K screen in their living rooms, much less their cars. Yet that's exactly what'll be going on in the rear seat of the new i7.

BMW's Facebook post says the new 8K display, dubbed the "BMW Theater Screen," will be an optional extra for the electric luxury car. It's also our first official confirmation of the screen since BMW's new teaser images dropped a few days ago. From the looks of things, you'll be able to stream your favorite shows, in addition to some extra functionality. There appears to be a weather widget on the right of the screen, and we're betting some other operations will also be available.

BMW says the huge screen will reach nearly end-to-end in the i7, measuring 31 inches. Apparently, the screen will descend from the roof to its spot just behind the front seats. As of now, those are all the details we have on the new Theater Screen ahead of the i7's debut. It isn't clear how much the screen will obstruct that massive glass roof, which features LEDs laid into the glass to make the view out the roof all the more interesting, especially at night.

On the outside, it's apparent that the styling will largely be based on the controversial BMW X7 that debuted in April this year. Those squinty headlights certainly look familiar, and some images show a bit of the smoked running lights also seen on the X7.

Powertrain details are as-yet-unconfirmed, but we gleaned some info from BMW USA's site. The i7 will be offered as an xDrive60, which means AWD and the motors from the iX M60 electric SUV. If that's true, expect around 610 hp and a massive 811 lb-ft of torque. We'll know more when the car debuts in a few days.
