Volvo Sedans

Buy Used Volvo Models

With US buyers preferring crossovers and SUVs, it comes as no surprise that there are only two Volvo sedans for sale in America at present. The 2021 Volvo sedan models comprise the S60 compact luxury sedan and S90 midsize luxury sedan. Notably, though, Volvo offers AWD in both vehicles, as well as plug-in hybrid derivatives of both. Coupled with Volvo’s reputation for design excellence and safety, Volvo offers buyers capable all-weather cars with a sense of security, an eco-friendly nature, and a plush, opulent ride.

Volvo Sedan Models - Specifications

The Volvo S60 is the first Volvo to be manufactured in the USA. This new Volvo sedan was launched as a 2019 model and it joins the S90, which was has been around since 2016. Engine choices comprise gas and plug-in hybrids. Volvo sells no diesel vehicles in the US.

The current range of Volvo sedans is as follows:

  • Volvo S60: The S60 is slightly larger than the class average and cuts a stylish figure, inside and out. It leads the class in terms of safety features and crash ratings and stands out for its ride quality and tech availability as well. The performance of the flagship hybrid T8 and Polestar Engineered versions is very good. However, the trunk is surprisingly small, considering its exterior dimensions and the hybrid has a limited all-electric range. Handling is not class-leading and the extra weight of the AWD and hybrid models make it feel a little heavy-handed at times.
  • Volvo S90: The S90 is now an AWD-only range, both in normal gas and hybrid models. Its styling still catches the eye and other praiseworthy features include the elegant and spacious interior, comfortable ride, and many features fitted as standard. However, gas mileage is mediocre, the hybrid’s all-electric range is somewhat disappointing, the trunk is small for the class, and the base model’s price is still relatively high.

FAQs

What are the gas mileage and all-electric range of the hybrid Volvo sedans?

The Volvo S60 Recharge can go 22 miles on a charge in EV mode and returns an EPA average of 69 MPGe combined on battery and gas power. Gas-only fuel economy is 30 MPG combined and a total range of 510 miles is possible. The S90 Recharge has an all-electric range of 21 miles and its combined EPA-estimated gas mileage is 60 MPGe on battery and gas power. Its gas-only consumption is 30 MPG and it can cover a combined range of 490 miles.

Is it worth buying a hybrid Volvo, considering the mediocre economy and range?

If your daily round-trip commute is less than 20 miles, it would make sense to buy one of the hybrids, since you will be able to operate the vehicle in EV mode every day and not use any gas. However, considering the average gas mileage and price premium that the hybrids command, one of the normal and cheaper gas models is best and will make more economic sense if you are doing frequent long trips.

How long does it take to charge the hybrids’ batteries?

Using a standard 110-volt household connector, the 11.6-kWh battery used in both the S60 Recharge and S90 Recharge would take around six to eight hours to charge fully, so the battery can be topped up overnight even on 110 volts. The standard TurboCord cable supplied with the vehicles is also compatible with 220-volt outlets and charged through one of these, the battery should be full in about two and a half hours.

Can I buy an EV Volvo sedan?

Volvo offers no all-electric sedans in the US at present, only the S60 Recharge and S90 Recharge hybrids. The only Volvo EVs currently for sale are the small C40 and XC40 electric crossovers. It might be worth it to lease one to see whether an EV will work for you before you commit to buying. In time, the cost of buying an EV will come down.
