2023 Chevrolet Equinox Getting More Power

Rumor / 7 Comments

Before the popular crossover goes all-electric next year.

It's difficult to remember a time when we were excited about the Chevrolet Equinox, but the upcoming all-electric version with a sub-$30,000 price tag has us genuinely interested in Chevy's compact crossover. The Equinox EV won't arrive until later in 2023, but before then, Chevy still wants people to buy the current gas-powered model. The 2022 model year received a price increase but lost its optional 2.0-liter engine and its sporty special editions. According to the latest rumors, Chevy will rectify these missteps with the 2023 model.

No official news has been released yet, but sources believe the 2023 Equinox will get a new LSD engine to replace the current LYX unit. The LSD still displaces 1.5 liters with a turbocharger, but will reportedly produce five more horsepower for a total of 175 hp. Torque will remain the same at 203 lb-ft. That's far less than the discontinued 2.0 liter's 252 hp and 260 lb-ft, but an upgrade is an upgrade.

The 2022 Equinox didn't just drop an engine option, it lost the popular Midnight Edition and Sport Edition Packages as well. For the 2023 model year, both packages will reportedly return. As a reminder, these packages only change the Equinox aesthetically; they do not increase performance. We aren't sure if the 2023 versions will be exactly the same as they were back in 2021, but you can likely expect them to include black wheels, black exterior trim, black badging, and a matching blacked-out interior.

2023 Equinox production will likely begin soon, meaning we should get some official pricing and availability from Chevy in the coming weeks. With the Equinox EV arriving next year, 2023 will likely be the final model year to buy a gas-powered Equinox. Chevy has only provided minimal details about its upcoming EV, but based on the starting price alone, we believe it could be a winner.
